Maha Shivarathri festival in Kataragama

‘The Maha Shivarathri Festival’ is considered as one of the major religious events of Hindus throughout the world, which is celebrated in honour of the God ‘Shiva’.

This year’s Shivarathri festival was held on the on March 1 and a lot of Sri Lankan Hindu devotees were seen within the Kataragama Dewala premises.

They offered the sacred offerings to gods with the hope of attaining the blessings of the deity, to succeed in their lives. A large number of Buddhist devotees also visited the Kataragama sacred area to perform religious rituals around the ‘Kiriwehera ‘ and ‘Ashtapala Bodhi’.

A special Shiva pooja was held at a cave temple; which is known as the ‘Sella Kataragama Vallimatha Purana Gal Len Viharaya’.

There was a huge crowd which comprised a large number of devotees who had missed the chance of visiting this sacred place due to the Corona pandemic for nearly two years.

They were actively engaged in the devotions throughout the night by performing Kavadi dances and making their vows in front of the gods.
