No doubt you have heard the saying that there are seven seemingly identical people in the world. The scientific aspect of confirming or refuting it is unclear, but there are certain people who are identical in appearance. However, have you ever heard that there are similar countries? This article is about ‘Pulau Kenawa Island’, a beautiful island in the Indonesian archipelago that is very similar to Sri Lanka in shape.
Kenawa Island, a grassland with a large hill at the edge, is visited by a large number of tourists annually. It has a beautiful beach and is a frequent destination for photographers. In addition, campers love to spend a night on the island.
Land area
Indonesia is a group of islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It covers approximately 17,500 islands, including Sumatra and Java. Indonesia is the largest island nation in the world and the 14th largest country in the world by area. The total land area of Indonesia is estimated at 1,904,569 square kilometres. With a population of over 270 million, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. About half of them live on the island of Java.
Five of the more than 17,500 islands in the Indonesian archipelago are large and densely populated main islands. In addition, there are 30 other archipelagos, each consisting of a number of smaller islands. About 6,000 of the total islands of Indonesia are inhabited. One of them, Kenawa Island, is located northwest of Sumbawa Island, adjacent to the Alice Strait. There are several other small islands in the vicinity.
Covering an area of 13.8 hectares, the island is completely uninhabited. So it is an island without any disturbances. Although the shape of the island is very similar to that of Sri Lanka when viewed from the sky above, it is smaller in size than Sri Lanka.
Most of the tourists who visit Kenawa Island are local tourists. A wooden bridge is built over the island to allow frequent visitors to reach the island from the boat dock. Many people come to this island for photography as they can see every area without any hindrance. The tall grass bushes, the small hills, and the beaches around the island attract the attention of many visitors.
Public transport
From the main city in the Indonesian province of West Nusa, one can take a taxi or public transport to reach the port of Poto Tano on the island of Sumbawa, the nearest island to Kenawa. It takes about two hours. There is a taxi service from that port to Kenawa Island. It takes about 15 minutes to reach Kenawa Island from the harbour.
In addition, local fishermen also provide boat services to tourists visiting Kenawa Island. Their boats can be rented to reach the island. However, if such a fishing boat is to be used to reach the island, the boat owners must be notified of the expected date and time of their return to shore. Visitors to the island must bring water, food, medicine, and all other necessities. The reason is that there is no place on the island where one can buy such things.
There are a number of small structures on the island that can be used to protect visitors from the sun and rain. However, most of the tourists who come here aim to set up a tent near the beach and spend the night in it. Thus, the island’s administration has set a number of rules and regulations for campers on the island.
It is forbidden to light fires anywhere on the island during the dry season, as the grass that grows all over the island is dry. In addition, tents should be constructed to withstand the strong winds that blow across the island from time to time. The administration has also imposed strict regulations on tourists visiting Kenawa Island regarding garbage disposal.
