The University of Colombo has retained the top position among Sri Lankan universities in the 1st edition of Webometrics Ranking in 2022. The Webometrics University Ranking is a ranking system based on university web presence, visibility and web access.
The top ranking of the University of Colombo in Webometrics Ranking highlights the university’s visibility, transparency and indicators of excellence, which illustrates the teaching commitment, research results, the perceived international prestige and links with the community, industrial and economic sectors.
The University of Colombo has managed to continue its teaching, research and development activities in a quality and vibrant manner despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
All the academic programs of the University of Colombo were conducted online during the pandemic period. The students were provided necessary guidance and support to continue their studies through virtual platforms.
The University of Colombo celebrated 100 years of humanities and science education in Sri Lankan higher education in 2021. The university organised a number of events to commemorate its centenary celebrations throughout the year 2021 including the Annual Research Symposium where the academics from various disciplines presented their research papers.
Despite being the only metropolitan university in Sri Lanka, the University of Colombo is in the process of becoming a greener, carbon-neutral university through enhancing greenery, shifting to more renewable energy sources, and minimising the waste on campus, while promoting recycling and its contribution to a circular economy.
The University of Colombo has also initiated several community outreach programs with the aim of supporting the communities by sharing knowledge and technical expertise.

The University of Colombo provides education in varied academic disciplines for 37,636 students following undergraduate, post graduate, diploma and certificate level programs.
The University of Colombo has been ranked high in other international university rankings as well. In 2021, the University of Colombo was ranked as the top Sri Lankan university in Scimago Institutions Rankings.
