
State Minister of Money and Capital Market and State Enterprise Reforms, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, confirming news reports told the Sunday Observer yesterday that he will hand over his letter of resignation from his position as a Member of Parliament to the Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake tomorrow (September 13).
Cabraal said that he has accepted the invitation extended by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to take up the post of Central Bank Governor.
He said the current Central Bank Governor Prof. W.D.Lakshman will resign on September 14. “So, it is very likely that I will assume duties as the new Central Bank Governor on September 15.” The current Governor of the Central Bank Prof. Lakshman on Friday, September 10 announced that he will retire on September 14. Prof. Lakshman said via a virtual press briefing on Friday that he had originally planned to retire when he turned 80 next month.
