Two athletes to train in Turkey

20 June, 2021

Two specialist jumpers Sarangi Silva and Sreshan Dhananjaya who are currently training in Doha, Qatar are set to travel to Turkey to undergo further training for 30 days according to Maj. Gen Palitha Fernando the president of Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA).

Silva is a long jumper while Dhananjaya is a triple jumper set to compete in three meets while in Turkey. The two have not competed in world athletics recognized competitions since December 2020.

The two jumpers were sent to Qatar through a scholarship offered by the National Olympic Committee earlier this year but have not participated in a single competition recognized by World Athletics since then while athletes in Sri Lanka received two competitions.

Silva, the 24 year old South Asian Games Gold medallist did a personal best leap of 6.38m during the SAG and 6.33m during the 2020 National Championship before she received the scholarship.

She has not qualified to go to Tokyo purely due to lack of competitions as she needed at least three more competitions to obtain the necessary rankings or leapt 6.82m for direct qualification.

Dhananjaya, (24) holds the Sri Lanka record in the triple jump with a distance of 16.71m. (TBR)
