A monument for the Zion Church victims

A monument commemorating the attack on Zion Church, Central Road, Batticaloa on 21, April, 2019 was unveiled at the New Kallady Bridge along the Batticaloa-Kalmunai highway on Wednesday evening (21).

The monument was declared open by the Pastor of the church Roshan Maheshan where Batticaloa Additional Government Agent (Land) Navarubaranjani Mugunthan, Chief Engineer Road Development Authority R. Sasinanthan and Coordinator Children Emergency Relief International (CERI) S. Dharshan as well as relatives and friends of the victims placed light oil lamps and paid floral tributes.

The monument records the martyrdom of 31 devotees including 14 children belonging to 83 families.

It is to express the thanks of the Zion Church to the Batticaloa community who supported them irrespective of ethnic, religious and language differences.They also remember their Catholic brethren at Kochchikade and Katuwapitiya and those who lost their lives in the luxury hotels.
