A severe 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the east of New Zealand’s North Island on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning.
The residents were asked to stay alert although the warning was later withdrawn.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said, “There is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake.”
The US Geological Survey initially recorded the quake at 7.3, and then revised it down to 6.9.
