Rowing keepers want Rs.20 million to progress

8 March, 2020

The Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka has requested the Ministry of Sports to provide over Rs. 20 million for the progress of rowers in the country.

They have made this request by focusing on a three year project to win a gold medal in the Asian Games scheduled to take place in September 2022 in China.

Secretary of the Amateur Rowing Association Dimuth Gunawardena has requested the assistant director of sports in the Ministry to provide funds for a head coach, three assistant coaches and a sports pool. Director General of Sports Amal Edirisuriya, said that the Ministry of Sports and the new Sports Minister would be renegotiating allocations to the sports associations.

“We cannot assure of big money to just one association. We need to support more sports associations and the Ministry of Sports is helping to develop sports in whole country. But we are not saying that the Rowing Association is being ignored,” he said.

The Rowing Association said it needed the funds to prepare for Asian competitions and trainings to win an Asian gold medal after winning a silver medal last year.
