The Walawa Super Cross 2019 is scheduled to be flagged off on September 22 at the Craftsman Autodrome in Sevenagala organized by the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps and conducted by Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club.
Families of soldiers injured in battle have been granted housing facilities while their children who passed the Year Five scholarships and those who enter the University were given financial and other needs to enhance their education with the proceeds raised from the Walawa Supercross in past years.
These details were disclosed at a media briefing held at the Kingsbury Hotel last Monday by the Chairman of Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee Wasantha Madola and Deputy Chairman SLAMSC Brigadier Indu Samarakoon. This year nearly 250 drivers and riders have entered the racing arena setting a record for the event. They will compete in 24 events 12 cars and 12 motor cycles inclusive of four junior events. The best rider in the Group SM - Super Motard up to 250cc Class will be presented with a trophy in memory of Super Motard champion the late Ananda Wedisinghe. Last year’s ‘Walawa Super Cross’ champion Evon Gurusinghe was present at the briefing and stated that the track at Walawa is the best as it gives the best opportunity to race against stiff challenges. He further added that he hopes to retain the championship this year too though there will be stiff competition. Young riders have come up well in the recent past and this track is sure to give them an opportunity to race on a well prepared track.
Ashan Silva who bagged the best driver’s trophy on two consecutive years will go flat out to make it three in a row and is bound to face tough competition from young Kushan Peiris who has come to challenge in the SL-GT – 3500cc Class after leaving the lower classes, the Ford Lase/Mazda 1300 and 1500cc category.
The other top driver to pose a threat to Ashan will be the experienced Ushan Perera.
