The book From the World of Words deals with certain lexical items of the English Language. Awareness of lexemes in their correct perspective facilitates a learner to understand the words and their meanings well. A lexeme is the smallest or minimal unit of lexicon in a language that bears some meaning. Lexicon is the word stock or the vocabulary of a person. A lexeme has a morphological form, semantic content [meaning] and a syntactic category. Lexeme is basically an abstract notion used in linguistic morphology, the concrete realization of which is a word.
This book deals with ‘Parts of Speech’ at basic level and elaborates words at different levels with their contextual references.
Ajith has picked 592 words of nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives and explained their meanings and used them in sentences to enable the learner to understand them better. It is an effective way of introducing vocabulary. The information given in the book is useful for students at the school as well as university level.
The book can be recommended for the teaching of English as a second language. The author has used his experience in teaching English for 30 years in government and international schools, recognized institutes and universities, in compiling the book.
