Empower children with Down syndrome

25 March, 2018

The Rotaract District 3220 Sri Lanka and the Maldives will mark World Down Syndrome Day, March 31, at Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.

Organized by the The Rotaract District Committee along with the Rotaract Clubs of six state universities, namely, the Universities of Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura, Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Kelaniya and the General Sir John Kotelawela Defence University, the event will bring together 300 diagnosed children. The full day program will consist of a medical camp followed by a variety show performed by these children and an art exhibition displaying their talents.

When the affected children fight their way into society, they are supported by many individuals around them. Their parents and teachers put in an extra effort just to release the uncommon trauma from the children. As a significant change this year, a training and empowerment program will be conducted for teachers and parents of these kids, respectively, along with a sustainable educative program, the organizers said in a press release.

Those who would like to support such a worthy cause are invited to join the program and bring a smile to their faces. Down syndrome has been identified as a general complication, irrespective of a specific genetic background.

These kids may look different but they also have the same right to live a happy life, understanding that a difference such as having Down syndrome cannot isolate a person from humanity,
