Ranil Wijeyapala the award-winning columnist to the society, whose pen gave life to thousands of unheard stories, was a man who earned people, not money. Ranil’s public contribution to the profession as a journalist, his columns and feature stories and the effort that he put in to cover every corner of the media business with analytical acumen and ethical rigor depicted whom he was and how dedicated he was to reveal the truth behind every story with unparalleled clarity and wit. In person, Ranil was a man who never forgot to bring up a smile and cheer up those around him. He never failed to be there for others whenever they were going through a hard phase in life. He never failed in his role as a great friend, a great companion.
As a journalist, he managed to see complexities. During the span of the humanitarian operation, there were times that he disregarded his life to reveal the truth to society. Ranil’s pen was always writing only as per his will. His words were never amended for the will of another, but the truth.
He had a special power to shine a dazzling light on anyone’s life. He was a man that succeeded on all aspects in life.
He was always on top in his roles as a son, father, husband, journalist, friend and a great companion. He brought a smile of hope to those who didn’t even know what it was to smile, through the power of his words. He was a man of courage and resembled a real journalist, through his free writing pattern. He didn’t let any of the externalities affect his thoughts.
It’s not near possible to believe that a man with such generosity and kindness is not among us anymore. It’s heart wrenching to know that we will never get to see that smile of his that never fails to cheer up the day of another. It’s hard to think we will never be able to read or hear the words of wisdom that he spread. Ranil, you will always remain in the hearts of your loved ones, despite the fact that it’s hard to think of a day without a man with an amazing heart like you. We all know, you will always be among the good up above.
May your soul rest in peace.
