Matara - Kataragama railway extension nears completion

Almost 85% of phase one of the Matara – Kataragama Railway extension project, the 27 km Matara – Beliatta stretch is now completed.

It was accomplished by China Railway Group 5 with China National Machinery Import & Export Corporation. The two companies together are engaged to design and build the Matara – Kataragama railway extension line.

“China Railway Group Limited the holding company of China Railway Group 5 or better known as CR 5 has been building railroads for the past 120 years,” said Zhong Xiang CR 5’s Project Manager for the Southern Railway Extension Project in Sri Lanka.

“China Railway Group Limited, a Fortune 500 company has 43 subsidiary companies with over 300,000 employees around the world.

China Railway Group has built over 90,000 km of railroad, 10,000 km of high speed railway lines, designed and built 17,000 km of bridge works, 16,000 km of tunnels, over 2,000 km of subway and light rail roads, 40,000 km of roads and highways and many landmark buildings in over 90 countries around the world,” Zhong added.

“Engineers at China Railway and its subsidiaries such as CR 5 are well qualified and experienced in survey, design and construction of railroads and hence we can guarantee the quality of the Southern Railway extension. The Matara to Beliatta railroad extension in Sri Lanka has been designed to last a century,” he added.
