Vesak in Sri Lanka, Dharmadweepa

14 May, 2017

Buddhists the world over happy and gay
Await Vesak the thrice blessed day
Thathagatha the fountain of love and compassion
Influenced human mind with deep impression
Lanka sanctified by him on several occasions
Is supported by history and archaeological information
Buddha, well and truly knew Dhamma will be preserved here
And confirmed as Dharmadweepa to Sakra for divine care
Hence, true meaning of Vesak is well reflected
In the vast range of activities earnestly performed.
All Buddhists in temples islandwide
Devote time to meritorious deeds with pride
Sil campaigns, Pirith chanting and processions
Conducted, also include blood donations
Next glittering event - Pandols in the city
With flickering bulbs in high rises looking pretty
Vesak zones are decorated with flags all the way
It is a memorable milestone to celebrate the unique day
True Buddhists exhibit their generosity
Giving food to spectators who visit the city
So called “Dansalas” set up, is a common feature
Reflecting their attitude and faith by nature
Bhakthi Gee recitals made on fully lit stage
Have become a part of our national heritage
These are a few things celebrated in customary tradition
By Buddhists from sansaric ills to achieve liberation
