Elephant deaths due to train accidents

We learnt of the cruel deaths of 4 elephant calves by the Batticaloa bound night mail train, reported to have occurred on August 16 around 11 p.m. near Chettikulam in the Eastern Province.

It comes in the wake of the killing of two other elephants in the Northern Province, a few days ago by another night train!

A few years ago the C.G.R. and the Department of Wild Life Conservation proudly declared that they had implemented a comprehensive plan to end these needless deaths of our precious wild elephants on the rail tracks. What has become of this?

In the past it has been revealed that some of the engine drivers involved had been drunk!

The night trains must be instructed to reduce speed to a crawl as they go through jungle stretches, and these night trains can be fitted with cctv cameras and night vision devices (A special observer to aid the driver to keep a look out would also be valuable).

Special luminous warning signs must also be placed along the approaches to jungle tracks to alert the train crews.

Apart from the gruesome deaths of these animals, it is only a matter of time before there are human casualties.

I hope the authorities would step in and take action to minimize these accidents.

A.C.

Bribery Commission

The Director General of the Bribery Commission is silly to have resigned.

She should have written a polite letter to the President and asked him to send her a List of those who can be prosecuted and those who cannot be prosecuted.

That would have solved the problem.

As a favour she could copy the President’s List, when she receives it, to the other law enforcement agencies like the Police and Excise Department then to the Customs and Inland Revenue.

As a special favour to the rest of us citizens she could forward the List to the Courts as well.

Nihal Ratnayake,
Dehiwala.

‘Ghost Talk’

In my letter ‘Ghost Talk’ in the Sunday Observer of 9 October I have erroneously quoted the name of Ven. Kiribathgoda Gunananda Thera as the author of the book in which photographs of ghosts appear. The book referred to is by Ven. Madawela Upali, the title being, Parapsychology.

The error is regretted.

- V.M. Fernando,
Panadura.

Comments

Judging by the intensified attack on Rajapakse and the Joint opposition it confirms that the government is on overdrive today. Being dormant in economic matters for the past Three and a Half years and general mess up in everything attempted Government Ministers are spending time trying to cast aspersions on the previous regime throwing wild accusations on the Rajapakses’. If they would direct their attention to meeting election promises they would be on a better footing. The mass frauds perpetuated in Government establishments over the period of their short existence has amounted to astronomical level and caused losses of over ten times to that of any previous regime.. The plea that payment has to be made for monies borrowed by the previous regime does not hold water. It is nothing but a ploy to hoodwink the people whilst not applying proper management of the country’s resources. The common man is cleverer than to believe such fabricated lies. They need a regime which is committed to run the affairs of the country in order to usher in prosperity. Yes, whilst there have been frauds by the previous regime and foreign borrowing, at least a major part of the money was invested in viable projects that have proved successful – there are sufficient monuments erected which is In contrast to the present scams that have been orchestrated by government politicians and their supporters. The bottom line is that the country has been led to the deep end of economic chaos. On top of the robberies of state funds, mismanagement and indecision prevails at all levels whilst the President and Prime Minister undertake endless overseas travel at the drop of a hat, thus eroding the depleted coffers. No foreign direct investment has arrived in the country as our overseas representative’s sojourn in their destinations at the peoples’ expense. Above all political instability has dissuaded investment in the country. The appointees are political patriots incapable of binging in results. The whole country experiences difficulties and people are recipients of untold suffering. Officials are without direction as Ministers who are changed frequently mess up the economy. All is at standstill whilst the government politicians pay attention to feathering their own nest and politicians perfect their art of Stealing and hoodwinking the masses, trying to desperately cling to power. All the crooks are at large only sprats that rob a few rupees are convicted just to impress the people. Nevertheless the people cannot be fooled again. In view of the forthcoming elections that have been postponed on various pretexts. The government is nervous to conduct the elections obviously due to expected defeat. Therefore the government is on overdrive throwing wild accusations on the previous regime and the Joint Opposition as they cannot convince the people of having done anything tangible on the economic front when many people are on the brink of starvation. The economic pressure is also faced by the urban population especially the aged pensioners and those with fixed incomes. Bogus talk won’t heal our ills. The whole country is in the doldrums, economically and politically. The Yapalana regime is responsible for this scenario. The constituents of whom are a political mismatch as their ideologies are diagonally a mismatch. The verdict should be to send these monsters to the political graveyard and that is greater than a possibility as the people are sick of such a dubious regime.
