
A record number of over 650 schools from five provinces will participate at the Samaposha Provincial Schools Athletic Meet 2023 that is scheduled to begin on August 15.
With athletics gaining popularity in the country this event is organized in collaboration with provincial education offices keen to see the meet end successfully sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Limited.
The meets will be held in the five provinces of Uva, North Central, East, Northwest and South on different dates with more than 18,000 athletes contesting more than 70 events.
The first meet will be held in the North-Western Province from August 15 to 18 at the Albert Peiris Stadium in Wennappuwa and the last meet will be held in the Eastern Province from September 19 to 23 at the Leelarathna Stadium in Kantale.
Director of Education of the Northwestern Province Hemantha Abeykoon said that it is commendable that this meet is used to enable school athletes to become more aware of their abilities through new technology, to build pride as sportsmen and women.
“With the support of Samaposha it produces international-level athletes who bring laurels to this country,” said Abeykoon.
VP Govinna the Marketing Manager of CBL said that this is a large project that will see to the education of every child which is a must through sports where values and discipline are cultivated by the indulgence in sports.
“Through Samaposha, we endeavour to create a young generation with not only nutrition but also self-confidence and holistic development. Such Sports events can contribute to laying the foundation for taking school-level athletes to the international level,” said Sachi Fernando the General Manager of Marketing of CBL.
Former Sports Director of Education Ministry Sunil Jayaweera was the man who inaugurated this Samaposa Provincial School Sports Meet in 2015 and was the guest of honour at the Press conference held at Taj Samudra Hotel on Thursday (10).
