Algama wins Nuwara Eliya golf prize

A rising golfing star in young Reshan Algama showcased his talent by winning the gold division category for boys in the Prima Sunrise Bread sponsored tournament played at the beautiful Nuwara Eliya Golf Club course over two rounds.

He finished 17 strokes ahead of the runner-up Jevhan Sathasivam and a further three strokes ahead of joint third place youngsters Jacob Norton and Pranav Muralitharan.

Algama emerged with an outstanding score of two over par in the first round and an even par round in the second round for a total of 144 on the difficult and tricky course.

Sathasivam finished with 161 to clinch the runner-up place while Jacob Norton and Pranav Muralitharan were tied in third place on 164. NEGC’s Imran Nazeer finished on 166 to complete the top five finishes in the boys gold division age category of 15 to 18+ years.

This Nuwara Eliya Regional Junior Open 2023 event attracted the highest number of 69 entries in different age groups. There were an encouraging number of entries from the Juniors from Anuradhapura golfers, Ananda College, Colombo and the home club NEGC.

T. Atshaya of NEGC won the Gold Division for girls with Animu Karunathilaka from Colombo finishing runner-up.

The silver division for boys age category 12 – 14 + years was dominated by Anuradhapura golfers Janeesh Weerasinghe on 157 Gross one stroke ahead of Adhithya Weerasinghe, a further 3 strokes ahead of joint third placed Thejas Rathis Kanth and Keshav Algama of RCGC on 161. In a very hotly contested age group division Chandra Kumar Dharaniyan of NEGC finished in fifth place.

The girls silver division was also dominated by the Anuradhapura juniors, Dilini Amarawansa winning the 12 -14+ years age group from Kaitlyn Norton from Colombo followed by Dinuli Yahathugoda and Udithma Yasavi from Anuradhapura.

The bronze division age group 10-11+ years boys played over two rounds 14 Holes per round, was won by Yehansa Senanayake from Colombo by a clear 7 strokes from Lavidu Premarathna of Anuradhapura Golf on 157, one stroke ahead of Anuja Methsara on 158 in third place while Udeera Bandara and B.A. Sadaneth all of Anuradhapura occupied fourth and fifth places.

The bronze division for girls was won by Genuli Weerakoon with a gross aggregate of 199 from Vihara Herath and Nimasha Iddamalgoda all of Anuradhapura Golf Club.

Yuvan Rathis Kanth with an aggregate of 78 was the clear winner in the age group 9+ and under over nine holes and played over two rounds. Yuvan’s excellent score included an amazing hole-in-one on par 3, 15th hole. This unique achievement at such a young age augurs well for Yuvan and should hear more of him in the future.

The Copper division for girls was won by Ananya Kishanthan of Colombo. Ompragas Thrinayani of Nuwara Eliya finished second.
