Around 500 teachers play ‘truant’ with transfers

25 June, 2023

Around 500 of the 12,000 teachers who were transferred this year had not reported to their new workplaces so far, said Kurunegala District Senior Director of Education, W.M. Balasooriya.

This is a violation of the Education Ministry circular. Therefore, the Ministry can take disciplinary action against them. The school teachers of national schools who were transferred to other national schools recently were instructed to report for duty at their new workplaces on June 12. Balasooriya told the media that Education Ministry Secretary M.N. Ranasinghe is now planning to discontinue the payment of salaries to the teachers who had not reported for duty at the new schools so far. The Ministry has also issued the final reminder to these teachers.

The school heads of some national schools who had defied the request of the Education Ministry to release the teachers who were transferred are also liable to face disciplinary action according to the Establishment Code, he said.

However, the teachers who were transferred can appeal against the transfers but they have to do so after reporting to the new workplaces through the school head of the new school. The teachers who had defied these transfers are working in leading popular national schools in urban areas with more facilities, he added.
