Royal College’s rugby players came under scrutiny at yesterday’s match between them and St. Peter’s College which the latter won 11-5 at Bambalapitiya yesterday.
It happened in the second half after Royal scored their only try through a rolling maul to lead 5-3 as referee Ishanka Abeykoon summoned their captain and told him that he “received a message”, although he did not see anything, that there was “biting in the maul”. A Peterite player then showed the referee his hand apparently indicating a spot where he was bitten.
As the game progressed, the wired referee Abeykoon communicating with his assistants remarked “be on the look-out mate there is biting and hitting” after he awarded St. Peter’s College a penalty.
The issue was settled when the Peterites scored a last minute try and won.
