Keeping up with the economic crisis, Shivanthi Sansoni, founder of the Charlie’s Home by Save a Paw is counting her blessings to be able to continue the love and support they have been extending to our furry friends since 2016.
Charlie’s Home by Save a Paw is an animal shelter located in Ragama specialising in special care of dogs and houses over 300 disabled doggies in need of care.
“We are treating about 28 dogs right now, they are all Sri Lankan stray dogs and all in need of extensive care as some of them have met with accidents, some dumped, abused, beaten-up etc and a shot for these dogs cost about Rs. 970 each. Due to the difficulties we are facing right now, we are finding it very difficult to afford the medications, surgical procedures and even food at times. We are struggling with the innocent souls with us, at this rate we may have to close down and even the thought of that breaks my heart,” said Sansoni.
Shivanthi is a fierce advocate for animal welfare. She pushed for the introduction of an Animal Welfare Bill and led numerous non-violent demonstrations against shocking incidents of animal abuse, such as Charlie’s tragic death on December 31, 2018, after being cruelly set ablaze.
She has battled relentlessly to put an end to their misery and has taken Charlie’s abuse case and Max’s case in which the dog was shot on Vesak day in 2020 to court. She has campaigned for justice in all incidents of cruelty. She has dedicated her life for the well-being of these animals and is currently relying on the kindness of strangers to help her further this cause.
