Container load with goods worth Rs.350 mn detained

Declared as car parts with perfume, alcohol, cigarettes

A container load of goods declared as car parts worth around Rs.350 Mn brought from Dubai to Colombo Port and declared to the Customs as used car spare parts were detained by the Customs at the Orugodawatta Grey Line Customs Yard yesterday (6), Customs Director and acting spokesman Seevali Arukgoda said.

Customs officials opened and inspected this 40 feet long container yesterday at 4 pm which had been brought in the name of a businessman on Chatham Street, Colombo on May 13, and found three Allion and Prius cars, which had been disassembled into parts worth about Rs.40 million.

In addition to this, the Customs officials have seized a large stock of perfumes and cosmetics which made in United Arab Emirates and Britain, foreign alcohol, olive oil and foreign manufactured cigarettes, worth about Rs.180 million.

Arukgoda also said that the Sri Lankan government would have lost Rs.220 million in tax revenue due to the stock of goods that have been brought in this way without declaring it to the Customs officials.Further investigations are being carried by Customs officials.
