Suranga to coach Sylvestrians

A talented rugby coach Suranga Kodithuwakku comes in as head coach of St. Sylvester’s College rugby.

Avishka Shanuka is the captain and he is blessed with a good set of players and nearly forty players turn up at practices. The assistant coach is Shemal Weerasekara a Kandy SC player and the trainer is Akalanka Wallage.

Kandy women unbeaten

Skipper Tharushi Thathsarani led the Kandy women’s team from the front to win three games in a row in the under-23 Inter District Women’s T-20 tournament matches at the Pallekelle Prison ground.

The Kandy women presented good interesting cricket with the help of players like Tharushi Thathsarani, Sansala Wanigasekara, Diyoni Nirmala, Salini Dassanayake, Kavishka Sathsarani, Hiruni Dissanayake, Nimeshika Seneviratne, Dharani Dissanayake, Isiri Meegammana, Aseni Prashansa, Shanilka Sathyangi, Chamodi Mendis, Dinethra Chandraratne, Malmi Maneesha, Sadithma Abeysinghe, Yenuli Amarasinghe, Mihidini Sanidula, Shameera Niroshani, Harshi Sewmin and Sehansa Avindi.

They beat Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle and Trincomalee.

Hockey captain Zohara to be felicitated

Zohara Jumar, a double international from Kandy, is to be felicitated by the KDHA. She is the famous women’s hockey player who was the first to lead the country’s women’s team. During her days she was one of the top sportswomen to come out of Kandy.

She is a Double International in hockey and basketball and is now over 75 years. A product of Good Shepherd Convent, she played netball and was also a Public Schools’ athlete excelling in the javelin throw.
