Lasantha Wijesuriya goes back to school

Lasantha Anthony Wijesuriya has gone back to school not to study or play but to function as rugby consultant of St. Anthony’s College.

Wijesuriya does not have to prove his leadership qualities having done his part at Kandy SC and is one of the finest products of St. Anthony’s who represented Sri Lanka.

He captained his club Kandy SC to become triple champs unbeaten that marked a turning point for rugby in Kandy from where the best players now come through and join several clubs in the island.

Wijesuriya was rewarded for his excellent deeds by his appointment as Chairman of Kandy SC in 2002 after hanging up his boots in 1999 and has also functioned in various capacities including managing teams and selecting players.

Trinity old and present boys’ match

Rain was a spoiler at the Trinity Old Boys versus Present Boys cricket encounter.

Present boys taking the first turn of the wicket went on to score 222 in 37 overs with skipper Rahal Amarasinghe top scoring with 69 and Kusal Wijethunga making 50 while Ashan Lokukatiya bowled best to take 5 for 62 and Aamil Anaz had 3 for 53.

The Old Boys were 78 for 4 in 15.3 overs when rain forced the match to be called off.

KDCA Sixes postponed

The much awaited six a side cricket tournament organized by the Kandy District Cricket Association that was to commence yesterday was postponed for a later date due to wet weather conditions at the Prison ground at Pallekele.

Old Zahirians SC, Kandy CC, Galagedara CC, Visuvious SC, Gampola CC, Saracens CC, Kandy Youth CC, Madawala CC, Old Rajans SC, Old Antonians SC, Old Trinitians SC, Pallekele SC, Sylvestrians CC, Ekamuthu SC, Kandy Zeylanikans CC, Kandy Bloomfield CC, Blue Universal SC, Southerland SC, Liverpool SC, Black Eagle CC and Old Rathiyanz CC were lined up to play.

Trinity raise curtain against Dharmaraja

Trinity College will open their new inter-school league rugby season with a match against Dharmaraja College in the first week of June.

The players are hard at training under the watchful eyes of coach Fazil Marija and the team will be captained by utility player Attab Manzil who can play as fullback as well as fly half.

They will also have Buddhika Thalagampala as assistant coach in addition to Damith Dissanayake under18 forwards coach, Sanushka Abeywickrama under 18 backs coach, Priyantha Gunaratne under 16 head coach, KT Chaturanga under 16 forwards coach, Suranga Tennekoon under 18 forwards coach, Tharinda Ratwatte kicking coach and Tharaka Algama and Ravindu Wickramasinghe as strength and conditioning coaches.

Women’s T-20 cricket

The Kandy District Cricket Association has drawn up plans for an Under-23 women’s T20 inter district tournament under the auspices of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Teams from Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee are expected to contest the matches.
