State Trading Corporation (STC) Chairman Asiri Valisundara stated that the process of getting the necessary approval to import eggs from India from the relevant local institutions takes five days even though the total import process from India takes only one day.
As a result of this situation, it is a great hindrance to supply eggs to the market on time to end the egg scarcity and to provide relief to customers.
When inquired by the ‘Daily News’, he further said that a testing sample of a stock of one million eggs brought on April 4 is still in the Animal Production and Health Department’s laboratories for testing.
Therefore, if these tests can be expedited and given in two or three days, relief can be provided to the people.
The Chairman further said that attention must be paid to the increasing demand for eggs during the festive season especially from the beginning of January.
