Army rowers impress at Nationals

Shaylon Gunaratne of Asian International School was the schoolboy Sculler while Rovinya Wijesekara also of Asian International School was the schoolgirl Sculler at the Rowing National Championship held at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre on March 31 and April 1 while Army’s men and women took major honours.

Gunarathne also had the honour of winning the under-16 boys Double Scull and the boys’ quad scull to collect three gold medals.

Wijesekera also won the under-18 girls single scull event to collect two gold medals.

MBCH Liyanage of the Army won the women’s single sculls event for the fourth consecutive year. She also won the gold in the women’s Doubles Sculls event with JHS Waihenage.

In the events for seniors, Army stole major honours with their men and women rowers emerging victorious. Rowers from the Navy also displayed their prowess and came a close second in most of the events.

Special awards:

Schoolboy Sculler Trophy: Shaylon Gunaratne (AIS) PB; 7:39secs. Also won the under-16 boys Double Scull, U-16 boys Quad scull

Schoolgirl Sculler Trophy: Rovinya Wijesekara (AIS) also won U-18 girls single sculls

Open Category Awards:

Women’s single sculls: MBCH Liyanage (Army) Fourth consecutive year as champion. Also won women’s Doubles Scull.

Women’s Double Sculls: MBCH Liyanage and JHS Waihenage (Army) win for 5th consecutive year.

Women’s quadruple Sculls: KKTN Gunarathna, AAK Akurana, SS Vanculenburg and BR Kaushalya (Army).

Women’s Pairs: GGTU Sumanatissa and WAU Subashini (Navy)

Women’s Coxless Fours: TIS Mendis, WVSL Lakshani, JHS Waihenage and SGSK Weerakoon (Army)

Men’s single sculls: MNM Nafran (Army) Defending champion. Also won Men’s Double Sculls

Men’s double Sculls: MNM Nafran and EMNS Sagara (Army) (third consecutive win for Sagara)

Men’s Quadruple Sculls: KWM Samarakoon, MKB Chathuranga, WLC Jayamal and KSTSN Kariyawasam (Air Force)

Men’s Pairs: RMGP Bandara and PGCS Karunaratne (Army)

Men’s Coxless Fours: NGAN Gunawardana, ESV Premakumara, WG Gunarathna and HAS Hathurusinghe (Navy)

Overall Category Winners:

Junior Boys: winners; Ananda College (6 golds, Runners-up: Asian International School.

Junior category – Girls

Joint winners: Bishop’s College, Ladies College and Museaus College (3 golds)

Runners-up: Asian International School and Diyawanna Rowing Academy (2 golds)
