Resignations galore among football officials

5 March, 2023

Several resignations are reported to have taken place at Football Sri Lanka (FSL) following the ban imposed on it by the world governing body of the sport FIFA.

They were elected to the administration of FSL on January 14 this year.

Among the resignations are four executive committee members rendering FSL redundant according to an official.

Secretary Indika Thenuwara was the first to resign followed by two vice presidents in Deepika Kumari and Saman Nagahawatte.

The latest member to resign was treasurer T Sudhakar.

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) imposed the ban on FSL with effect from January 21.

In a letter signed by FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, FIFA declared that FSL has been suspended with effect from January 21 until further notice in accordance with article 16 of the FIFA Statutes.

The ban was imposed after Sri Lanka deviated from the roadmap of FIFA which wanted a change in the FSL governing system.
