International Women’s Day celebrations 2023 on March 8

5 March, 2023

The International Women’s Day celebrations 2023, themed, “She is the Pride of the Nation” will be held at the Waters Edge, Battaramulla on March 8 under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. It is dedicated to honour the remarkable achievements of Sri Lankan women.

State Minister of Women and Child Affairs Geetha Kumarasinghe told the media that among the event’s highlights will be the awarding of four exceptional women who have epitomised the grace and elegance of Sri Lankan women globally and locally.

She said, “We acknowledge and appreciate the immense contribution of women in Sri Lanka’s development and believe that recognising them will serve as an inspiration to all women in the country. The event will also recognise 25 district-wise outstanding female entrepreneurs, and they will be presented gifts and certificates.”

The Minister said while Sri Lankan women have made significant strides in education and healthcare, we recognise that some women’s rights are still being violated, and their image is being tarnished.

Therefore, the President has directed the Ministry to prepare a long-term strategy to improve women’s conditions in Sri Lanka, which will be launched during the event.

Despite the current social and economic challenges Sri Lankan women continue to exhibit strength and resilience, earning respect and admiration, she said.

Minister Kumarasinghe said the Women’s Day celebrations will also showcase Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, adding more colour to the occasion and added that no Government funds will be used for the event, as we have received generous donations from the UNFPA and other external parties.
