
The Supreme Court today (10 January) held that there is no necessity toissue a writ of mandamus against the Election Commission to hold elections, as the Commission has already pledged to conduct the local government elections in accordance with the law.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court has given permission to the Election Commission to conduct the local government elections according to the plan currently in place
Two writ application was filed by a group of MPs including Professor G. L. Peiris requesting awrit of mandamus against the Election Commission to hold local government elections. The Supreme Court has given permission to conclude proceedings on these two applications.
