Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe said on Friday that when he receives the committee report on allegations that cricketers from a particular religious sect are selected to the national team, he would refer the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department.
The allegations are being investigated by a five-member committee led by former High Court judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardane.
The Minister said that recruiting players based on their religious convictions is a serious crime and that he has received information that some members of these fundamentalist sects hold influential positions in the local cricket sphere and that their actions have contributed to injustices and discrimination against the players.
The centre of the fundamentalist religious group is on the Katunayake-Veyangoda road, the sources said.
