Independent Commissions to be set up under 22A

23 October, 2022

The third reading of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution which was passed in Parliament by a two-thirds majority on Friday will pave the way to set up Independent Commissions again.

The Election Commission, Judicial Service Commission, National Police Commission, Public Service Commission, Audit Service Commission, Human Rights Commission, Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Finance Commission, Delimitation Commission, and National Procurement Commission will be set up.

This will end the practice of the President appointing these Commissions. The provisions of the 22nd Amendment permits impartial appointments to these Commissions. Political analysts said that Sri Lanka’s ability to set up these Independent Commissions, which was earlier introduced by the 19th Amendment, merits international recognition.
