Youth rugby to hit the turf with Open Sevens

1 May, 2022

In what could be a direct snub on the Sports Ministry which sacked an elected membership of Sri Lanka Rugby and stopped the high profile inter-club league rugby championship three weeks ago, the influential Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) has come forward to organize an Open Sevens tournament for both clubs and schools.

Thus rugby players in the top eight schools in the Western Province will also get an opportunity to showcase their talent and get back into rhythm when they participate in the Open seven-a-side club tournament on May 16.

According to the Chairman Tournament Committee of the WPRFU Nizam Jamaldeen, invitations have been sent to all the clubs within the Western Province informing them of the event.

Jamaldeen said the Open Sevens will also be a great opportunity for school leavers who were deprived of displaying their talents during the last two years due to the pandemic while the clubs too can have a closer look at young players for enrolment in their squads in preparation for the next season which is expected to commence in November.

President of the WPRFU Roshan Deen said budding players were looking forward to the championship while several sponsors have shown interest to get on board.

“We have spoken to some potential sponsors and they have told us they will be happy to come on board to help us,” said Deen.

The WPRFU has also decided to organize an under-21 and under-24 Sevens tournament this year.
