Police Headquarters has received reliable information that notorious harmful drug racketeers and dealers are organising parties for youngsters countrywide to enjoy narcotics.
“Police stations countrywide have been instructed to be on the lookout for these narcotics parties and take legal action against the culprits,” said former Kurunegala District SSP S.D. Jayasekara at a meeting of provincial journalists to educate them on the ills of drug addiction at the Bingiriya Youth Training Centre, Kurunegala recently.
Nearly 189 raids were conducted last year and 18 raids were conducted this year to arrest drug addicts who had participated in these parties.
Police intelligence officers have been deployed to gather information on such drug parties and about 678 suspects had been arrested during the past eighteen months from various parts of the country.
Sleazy businessmen and certain provincial level politicians have been found to have invested in these parties. Police Headquarters has warned youth not to participate in such parties where very harmful drugs are served to the participants till they become crazy or disturbed by being intoxicated by those drugs.
About 2,000 youngsters are now being treated medically countrywide as their brains and memory power have gone haywire due to the addiction to drugs.
Parents should be alert over their children who can easily become victims of drugs by associating with drug addicts.
