The highly transmissible new variant of coronavirus found in the UK was detected in Sri Lanka, said Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura.
This UK variant was found in samples obtained from Colombo, Avissawella, Vavuniya and Biyagama. The virus is of B.1.1.7 lineage.
