Sri Lankan makes First Class debut for Middlesex

Thilan Walallavita, a 22 year old Sri Lankan made his first class debut in England for Middlesex last week at the Surrey Oval.

A left hand batsman and left arm bowler Walallavita took two wickets in the match as Middlesex beat Surrey by 190 runs.

Walallavita is the elder son of former cricketer Ajith Walallavita who played for Panadura SC.

The junior Walallavita is a past student of Leeds International School, Panadura and commenced his cricket at the SRS Cricket Academy in Panadura under the guidance of Rohan Soysa and Sajeewa de Silva.

He was initially coached at home by his father Ajith while Nisansala Mendis was his school coach at Leeds International that he represented in the 2010 season.

He was adjudged the best bowler in the Under-15 tournament and left for England two years later where he joined the Middlesex Academy.

He was adjudged the Youth Player of Middlesex in 2016 and became a key member of the second X1 side.

He ended up as the fifth highest wicket taker of the championship in 2018 with 22 scalps in nine matches that helped him to earn his first professional contract in January. (YK)
