Election Commission tells President to consult SC - Gammanpila

19 April, 2020

Sending a letter to the President asking him to consult the Supreme Court in connection with holding the election is similar to asking a friend to go and see the doctor and obtain medical treatment when someone else is sick, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader and former MP Udaya Gammanpila said.

When a person falls sick he or she should see the doctor and obtain medical treatment. There is no point asking another healthy person to see the doctor and obtain medical treatment, he said, while speaking to the electronic media on Friday.

The existing law clearly states what to do and who should do it in connection with holding the General Election.

According to the Constitution, what should have been done was for the Election Commission to consult the Attorney General to obtain advice. Instead, they sent a letter to the President asking him to consult the Supreme Court.

Even a Grade four or five student would know how formal letters are drafted and sent.

Usually we send the original letter to the official and copy it to his/her superiors. When it comes to the Sri Lankan Executive President, there is no superior official above him. Therefore copying a formal letter written to the President to anyone else simply shows lack of knowledge and experience, he added.
