Sri Lanka has sufficient essential food items

29 March, 2020

Sri Lanka has essential food items sufficient for 4 months, despite the disturbance to imports of essential commodities due to the lockdown of certain countries,  Head of Media Coordination, Special Presidential Task Force for Essential Services, Prof. Charitha Herath told the Sunday Observer yesterday.  Head of the Task Force former Minister Basil Rajapaksa informed last week that all essential food items including rice, coconut, vegetables, eggs and chicken are supplied to consumers through a network with co-operatives and supermarkets. At a special discussion it was also decided to involve public officers of respective areas to strengthen the essential commodities distribution.  The former Minister advised members of the Task Force to implement the mechanism of supplying essential services to the general public while securing the farmer, customers and the national economy.  “Since we have a strong local supply base of food items, the public should not worry about provisions,” the Prof. said.
