A mix of nature and modern elegance

19 January, 2020

THE RADH has completed one year since its opening. Located in Kandy the luxury boutique hotel opens to the magnificent views of the hill capital, located near the train and the bus stations. Its approach is simple and yet elegant and adds to old world Kandyan charm.

The hotel is said to be the first to be located in the old city of Kandy, within the Sacred Temple area. The hotel surroundings are the views of the devalas, museums and historic monuments of the city. Kandy is known for its rich history and culture, the lake, and the busy markets and shops along small alleyways inside the city.

Ambience

The lobby area has a very simple yet charming sitting area, not taking too much space and when entering there is the renowned Cafe Nihonbashi which serves authentic Japanese Cuisine, along with a few Sri Lankan dishes created by Chef Dharshan Munidasa.

After a long bus ride, I was served with a chilled coconut and lime. I walked around admiring the beauty of the plants placed around the hotel, the ceiling coloured in hues of dull pink, burnt orange, mahogany and bright green. Being a nature lover I found it so refreshing to see so many plants.

It was interesting to see how much natural light comes in through the glass ceilings. The classy interior designs and the glass elevator were an amazing addition to the interior. The hotel is eco-friendly with biodegradable products ranging from drinking straws to bristles on the toothbrushes in use. Every bathroom and balcony has plants placed in some corner.

The rooms

There are 29 rooms in total. I stayed in a single bedroom. The view from the balcony opened to a stunning view of the Temple and the hills with much greenery on their slopes. The rooms are equipped with modern amenities like Wi-Fi enabled JBL radio and Bluetooth speaker, mini-fridge, closet and mood lighting. All the rooms come with a private balcony.

The suites are equipped with Illy coffee machines and a well-placed Jacuzzi on the private balcony. The family rooms have a special connecting door to smaller rooms.

The food

The hotel houses Café Nihonbashi which has a very simple seating area and the menu is customised to suit the palette of the people of Kandy while still remaining true to its Japanese roots.

The breakfast buffet consists of typical Sri Lankan food to a simple English breakfast. There are several juices, and again everything is eco-friendly. For lunch and dinner it is a four course meal, with many greens and you see the food being prepared.

A place to stay

Next time if you are travelling to Kandy, this is an ideal place to stay over. The hospitality was good, and the room was very comfortable and spacious as well. What mattered was the balcony, a cup of coffee and an evening view. So you young travellers hop on to the intercity and take a trip to Kandy.
