The funeral of former cricketer, KDCA and CPCA official Aubrey Kuruppu will take place on Monday at 4 pm at the General cemetery in Borella.

A product of S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia who played in the mid 1960s, Kuruppu earned a name in Kandy as a coach and administrator.

He was a left-hand bat, right-arm off break and googly bowler who also played for the Peradeniya University team with distinction.

He represented the Sri Lanka Board President’s team versus Tamil Nadu in 1972 in the Gopalan Trophy and toured India with the State Services team in 1972.

He also played for the Central Province and was a life member of the Saracen Sports Club in Colombo.

Kuruppu endeared himself as a fine and understanding administrator who was the Secretary of the Kandy District Cricket Association and committee member of the Central Province Cricket Association.

He coached Rahula College and Vidyartha College producing some top players while at the same time was also a top cricket commentator for more than 25 years.

In later years Kuruppu worked as a sports journalist who specialised in rugby coverage and one of his last assignments was the recent Asian rugby Sevens in Colombo a fortnight ago.

He was an extremely calm and amiable media personality with a good sense of humour and honestly committed to his work.

He was 74 years at the time of a sudden death on Friday.
