National Organiser of the United Left Front (ULF) Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne, clarifying media reports on his party’s position regarding the upcoming presidential election, said that, although the central committee of the ULF has decided to support Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Dr. Wickramaratne will remain with the government.
“No decision was taken to leave the Government. On the other hand, the party decided unanimously that I should continue to sit on the government benches,” he said in a statement.
According to him, it has also been decided to request party supporters and the people to mark the second preference in favour of the strongest candidate against Gotabaya Rajapakse in order to defeat the threat of authoritarianism.
“The consensus was clearly to pursue both objectives with the same vigour,” he said.
