Sugala Deshani’s debut cross stitch exhibition will be held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, Colombo on August 24 and 25th from 9am to 8pm. The opening ceremony will be on Friday, the 23rd, at 4.30pm and the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Senior Professor Ariyaratne KaluArachchi will be the chief guest.
Sugala is a quality assurance engineer at Creative Software and has been very involved in cross stitch since she was in grade 10. After pursuing her secondary education at St. Mary’s Girls’ College, Avissawella and Gothami Vidayalaya, Colombo, Sugala pursued tertiary education at the University of Dublin, Ireland after completing Software Diplomas from NIBM and NSBM in Sri Lanka. Despite a busy schedule, Sugala’s passion for cross stitch has made her an expert in this field. Nayana from St. Mary’s College is the teacher who inspired and taught Sugala the basics of cross stitch. For her, it is an incredible art and a skill which one could master if one devotes time and effort into it. According to Sugala mastering only the skill is not enough, one should also master patience and mindfulness. A real cross stitch artist never sees blanks onan empty fabric; she sees creative art in it in her mind’s eye.
