Yoga Day at Independence Square

The fifth International Day of Yoga organised by the High Commission of India was celebrated at the Independence Square yesterday with the participation of yoga enthusiasts from all over the country.

High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Taranjit Singh Sandhu said that yoga is an important pillar of the common heritage between India and Sri Lanka. He outlined the strong connection between yoga and Buddhist philosophy. “Yoga is a unifying force which can bring peace and harmony not only to our bodies and minds but to our societies,” he said.

Experts from Yoga institutes of Sri Lanka such as the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Ramakrishna Mission, Ashtanga Yoga Mandir, Sethsada Yoga, and Hatha Yoga Centre conducted yoga, pranayama and meditation sessions followed by advanced Yoga demonstrations.

The event was also attended by the Minister of Health, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Minister of Lands and Parliamentary Reforms, Gayantha Karunathilaka and Minister of Upcountry New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development, Palani Digambaran.
