Indra de Silva – a police chief with an illustrious career

30 December, 2018

It is three years today, December 30, since Indra de Silva, the former Inspector General of Police passed away. He was the 28th Inspector General of Police at the time, when I was the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order, until he retired from service, where he performed a celebrated service.

Indra very much believed in the community police because it enabled the police to work in close harmony with the public and always emphasised that it should be strengthened. He explained any given subject promptly, a competence he had been endowed with, from the experience he had gained during the tenure as lecturer in the Geography Faculty of the University of Peradeniya, I believe. Hailing from Hambantota, he was educated at Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda and later entered the University of Peradeniya, where he obtained an honours degree and later invited to be a lecturer in the Geography Faculty. He joined the Sri Lanka Police as a Trainee Assistant Superintendent of Police on December 15, 1971. He served in many areas in the island and retired on September 30, 2004. After retirement, he rendered an exemplary service as a Member of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

He is survived by his beloved wife Wasantha Seneviratne and children Sonali, Laxmi, Chatura and Maheshi.

This piece is to appreciate Indra de Silva’s valiant service as a dedicated police officer and an admirable public servant and to wish him the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.
