Interim govt an unwise move, says political analyst

14 October, 2018

Senior lawyer and political analyst Gomin Dayasri said the move by the Joint Opposition to go for an interim government will only result in further economic hardships for the people.

Calling it an unwise move he said, this idea of the interim government brought forth by the Joint Opposition and certain SLFP politicians will contribute to further devalue the rupee.

This situation, however, should be blamed on the judgment which restricts holding of the general election for four and half years, he said.

“In every other democracy when the Budget is defeated or a vote of no confidence is won, a fresh election has to be held. But in this country if the government resigns, the next government has to be appointed with the same heads in parliament, we cannot go for fresh elections for almost five years due to a Supreme Court judgment.”

“That is why this situation has been created to go for an interim government and appoint Mahinda as the Prime Minister which is not an ideal situation,” he added.

The SLPP is signaling of moves to defeat the 2019 Budget and forming an interim government ahead of presidential elections late next year?

Such moves have been talked of due to the Siripavan-judgment, where it has been said the parliamentary elections cannot be held until four and half years of the last election.

“We have a situation where presidential elections can be held after four years and a general election only four and half years. The presidential election preparations takes up to three months, so it is almost five years before a fresh general election can be held.”
