Musaeus College braved the rain to the maximum and won five of the six races that were worked off on the waters of the Beira Lake in Colombo yesterday as their rivals from Ladies College won one event at their annual rowing meet.
Due to heavy rain four races were put off for this morning including the A Four boat race.
Musaeus College which won the title last year, secured the B Scull, A Scull, A Pair and A Doubles while Ladies College managed to won the B Pair when their duo of Ayani Perera and Gabriella Senanayake clocked 4.13 seconds.
The Musaeus duo of Thamdansi Hewage and Thanushi Perera clocked 4.16.
In the opening B Scull race Musaeus College’s Senuri de Silva overcame the Ladies competitor Anithra Fernando (4.30) clocking 4.26 while the A Scull too was won by Musaeus girl Hasini Hettige when she clocked 4.23 against Ladies College’s Anelka Karunaratne who clocked 4.40.
In the A Pair race Musaeus oarswomen Binali de Alwis and Maedhini de Alwis secured the win by clocking 4.40 while the Ladies duo of Ashvini Subasinghe and Kiara Kumarasinghe recorded 4.46 respectively.
At one stage due to heavy rain the races were stopped for more than two hours and after the recommencement the ‘A’ Double race got off against strong winds and the Musaeus duo of Maedhini de Alwis and Senuri de Alwis won by a big margin of 4.39 to Ladies College’s Anya Dewapura and Anelka Karunaratne who finished in 4.48.
The rowing meet between the two schools started in 2004 with the aim of developing a good relationship between the two institutions creating a greater opportunity for both teams to showcase their talents and skills in the sport.
Of the past 14 regattas, Ladies’ College posses a better track record winning the meet nine times while Musaeus won it four times and both teams shared the trophy on one occasion.
Although Ladies have more wins, Musaeus have dominated in the recent past, breaking a five year hoodoo in 2016 and defending their title in 2017.
