Kurunegala District Parliamentarian and Cabinet co-spokesman Dayasiri Jayasekara said, Cabinet has approved the request to declare a guaranteed (fixed) price for pepper.
Accordingly, a Kg of pepper will be purchased at Rs.900 and farmers will be granted a subsidy of Rs.150.
Minister Jayasekara added that this decision was taken considering the recommendations of the Ministerial sub-committee appointed to address the grievances faced by pepper farmers in the country due to the sudden and unexpected fall of pepper prices.
More than 450,000 farmers would thus benefit.
