
President Maithripala Sirisena and his wife Jayanthi will arrive in New York this evening to attend the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Foreign Ministry sources said.
The Foreign Affairs and Development Assistance Minister Tilak Marapana is due to join
him in New York on Monday morning.
President Sirisena will address the General Assembly on Tuesday evening, which is the opening day of the high level segment.
He will meet UN Secretary General António Guterres and hold bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and Nepal on the sidelines of the event. The President is also due to visit the New York Buddhist Vihara and meet the Chief Incumbent Ven. Pandith Kurunegoda Piyatissa Maha Nayaka Thera on September 23.
He is also expected to take part in a community event during his stay.
The US President will host the world leaders to a reception on Tuesday evening.
The Sri Lankan delegation to the UNGA is tipped to include Deputy Minister of Telecommunication Tharanath Basnayake and Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare, Ranjan Ramanayake. – MF
