Dr. Thilokasundari Kariyawasam passes away

A senior and a well known educationist Dr. Thilokasundari Kariyawasam passed away yesterday. She was 88 at the time of her death. Dr. Kariyawasam served as the Director General of the National Institute of Education and held the post of State Secretary to the Minister of Education. In 1957, Dr. Kariyawasam was appointed principal of Sangamitta Girls School, Galle and she served the school till 1970 during which time the school showed remarkable progress.

Sangamitta shot into prominence when 105 students of the school were chosen to enter into university in 1964. It also produced the best Advanced Level results in 1964 under the guidance of Dr. Kariyawasam. The remains of Dr. Kariyawasam lie at 64/7, Nawala Road, Nugegoda.

Final rights will be held on Tuesday, July 18 at 4 p.m.
