The Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) has to raise US $ 362,000 for the biennium 2018-2019 to implement the latest Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka and the member States have been informed of this by High Commissioner Zeid Al Hussein.
A Foreign Ministry source said the member countries and the co-sponsors are expected to raise these funds.
The consensual resolution co-sponsored by the US, Sri Lanka and several other countries extended the time for Sri Lanka to fully implement the 30/1 HRC resolution; Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka, adopted by the Council in September 2015. The resolution has to be implemented without any amendments or additions. According to Foreign Ministry sources, US $ 64,400 has been allocated for pre-session documentation, another US $ 38,100 for missions by that will be undertaken by the OHCHR staff to Sri Lanka and $ 18,000 for general operational expenses during missions.
The highest allocation of US $ 241,500 will be set aside for general temporary assistance.
The sources said this will cover technical and other assistance by the OHCHR. The joint resolution was adopted without a vote on March 23.
The resolution ‘A/HRC/34/L.1’ was passed with 36 additional co-sponsors.
The resolution was submitted by the United States with Montenegro, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the main sponsors and Sri Lanka a co-sponsor.
Titled ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka’ the resolution gives Sri Lanka two years to show more progress in implementing the 2015 resolution on Sri Lanka.
