I will stand for the defence and honour of war heroes - President

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that he is not ready to dance to the tune of certain non-governmental organisations in the task of governing the country or charge sheet the members of the security forces.

The President said so during a meeting with the members of the tri-forces and the police after an inspection tour of the Palali Air Force camp.

The President said that he out rightly rejected the UNHR commissioner’s recent proposal to permit foreign judges to sit in judgment over our war heroes. He would during his tenure stand for the defence and honor of the war heroes who were dedicated to safeguard the independence of the motherland, he said.

The President reiterated that he is proud of his role as the chief protector of the war heroes and added that he would not permit any activities to the detriment of their honor during his tenure as President despite allegations by the NGOs who are always in pursuit of money and also those rival political parties with their agendas for narrow political gain.

‘I will not fail in my duty to take steps to ensure the security of the country and its people as provided for in the constitution while protecting the independence of the motherland and its territorial integrity irrespective of whatever allegations leveled against the government by the local and foreign forces, the President said.

He said he would dedicate himself to make the tri-forces a dynamic security establishment by equipping it with modern technology and providing more training opportunities.

The President who visited the Security Forces Headquarters yesterday morning exchanged pleasantries with the members of the tri-forces and bestowed presents to the retired war heroes who had served in Jaffna.

A sapling was also planted at the Security Forces Headquarters to mark the President’s visit.

Later, the President visited the Palali Air Force camp and discussed the problems and difficulties if any, faced by the Air Force personnel.

Ministers Mahinda Samarasinghe and Duminda Dissanayake and Chiefs of the Tri Forces, Inspector General of Police, Northern Province Security Forces Commander Major General Mahesh Senanayake and top military brass were present.
