Sri Lanka Insurance Motor Plus powered a road safety campaign launched by Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and the Sri Lanka Police, to minimise road accidents and reduce the number of deaths caused as a result, which is currently a grave concern in the country.

As per the statistics, the number of deaths caused by road accidents in Sri Lanka in 2015 was a staggering 2,722; 814 of these were motor-cyclists, 777 pedestrians and 486 were three-wheeler passengers. Eight people die every day in road accidents; over 40,000 accidents are reported to the police every year while many more go unreported.

The number of road deaths keeps increasing by about 300 on an annual basis. The stated statistics clearly indicate the absolute necessity for programmes that not only capture the awareness of the driver, but also facilitate road safety signages which are currently missing and the strict implementation of road rules.

The ‘Parissamen Gihin Enna’ program was launched on December 1 under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at Independence Square, Colombo. It was simultaneously launched in Gampaha and Kalutara.

Joint Managing Director, Sri Lanka Insurance, Keith Bernard said that the rising number of traffic accidents prompted Sri Lanka Insurance to get together with the other participating organisations for this campaign. “As the premier motor insurer in the country, we are always committed to making the roads of Sri Lanka safer for the public. That is the reason we have got involved in this worthy cause as the official insurer,” he said.
